Desiring God is hiring a
Remote Senior Email Marketing Specialist
📍 Remote
Senior Email Marketing Specialist
YOUR ROLE
You would own the email marketing engine at Desiring God — building, running, and improving the systems that connect hundreds of thousands of readers, listeners, and ministry partners with content that matters. Day to day, that means planning and executing campaigns end-to-end in Customer.io: segmentation logic, assembly, deployment, and performance monitoring. Pull open-rate data from a devotional send, flag what underperformed, adjust the subject line strategy before the next one goes out.
You would also design and maintain the automated lifecycle flows that meet people at every stage — from a first-time subscriber's welcome sequence to the long journey of deepening engagement as a ministry partner. Most of these would be new builds for Desiring God, so a builder's mindset is welcome. You would own re-engagement campaigns, content-series drips, and trigger-based sends, and you'd be the team's source of truth on performance: deliverability, list growth, unsubscribe trends, revenue attribution, and list hygiene that protects sender reputation.
You would work closely with editorial and content teams to turn ministry priorities into campaign briefs — coordinating send schedules and adapting messaging across audience buckets (free subscribers, app users, ministry partners) for book launches, conference registrations, and giving seasons. You would join a small, focused Spreading team alongside the Director of Digital Spreading, a Social Media Specialist, and a Paid Marketing Specialist, building marketing infrastructure largely from the ground up — meaning your decisions shape how this ministry reaches people for years to come.

Responsibilities
- Email Execution & Optimization (40%)
Plan, build, and deploy email campaigns across subscriber, user, and donor audiences while managing segmentation logic, running A/B tests, and maintaining list hygiene so that every send reaches the right person and performs well. - Automation & Lifecycle Marketing (25%)
Design and maintain automated flows for key audience journeys like welcome sequences, re-engagement campaigns, drip flows, and trigger-based communications so that subscribers are consistently nurtured and moved toward deeper engagement with our resources. - Analytics & Reporting (20%)
Own email performance data and surface actionable insights for the team by tracking core KPIs (open rate, CTR, deliverability, list growth, unsubscribe rate) and running regular performance reviews so that our email program improves continuously and decisions are grounded in data. - Copy Execution & Coordination (15%)
Execute and refine email copy in alignment with campaign briefs by working from templates, collaborating with stakeholders, and editing for audience and tone so that our communications are clear, on-brand, and effective.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
You Bring
- 2–4 years of professional email marketing experience, with campaigns in your portfolio that you can speak to with data
- Hands-on experience with a major ESP (Customer.io, Klaviyo, HubSpot, or similar) seeking platform fluency, not just familiarity
- Strong command of segmentation logic, list management, and deliverability best practices
- Experience building and optimizing automated flows and lifecycle sequences
- Comfort with analytics: you know how to read performance data and turn it into a recommendation
- Solid writing instincts: you can work from a brief and make copy tighter, not just different
- Familiarity with HTML/CSS for email is a plus
You Are
- A seasoned email practitioner with 2–4 years of hands-on experience who has owned campaigns from brief to send. You are comfortable with list management, segmentation logic, deliverability, and performance reporting inside a major ESP like Customer.io, Klaviyo, or HubSpot.
- Analytically curious and self-directed: You move naturally from data to diagnosis to decision, run A/B tests because you genuinely want to know the answer, and don't wait to be told what to measure.
- A clear, mission-sensitive editor: You have the instincts to edit copy for tone and audience, you understand that a devotional email to a longtime ministry partner sounds different than a welcome email to a first-time subscriber, and you take that difference seriously.
- Organized and collaborative: You manage multiple campaigns and automation flows without dropping threads, communicate proactively with stakeholders, and build working relationships across editorial, product, and paid media without needing those relationships to be formal.
- A Christian genuinely moved by the mission: You see email not just as a channel but as a means of grace, and that conviction shapes how carefully you do the work to spread the stories Desiring God exists to tell.
The Team
You'll join a small but growing Spreading team that includes a Director of Digital Spreading and a Social Media Specialist, alongside contracted support in paid media. We're building the marketing infrastructure at Desiring God from the ground up and that means real ownership, real impact, and room to grow as the team expands.
Culture
- You like to do creative explorations and iterate on ideas
- Humble authenticity in heart posture, working with excellence but with others on the team in humility
- Excited to share ideas, collaborate across teams and disciplines, and work with others to bring concepts to life in video
- The ability to orient around plans and deadlines to complete work on schedule
- Able to receive feedback and critique from a team and prioritize what to incorporate
- Treasuring and embodying the truths of a Christian Hedonist.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ROLE
- Ability to adhere to our affirmation of faith.
- Able to legally work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Desiring God is a hybrid workplace, and this role is open to remote talent.
